It has come to our attention that we
are in need of more foster homes for our homeless Bassets.
The more foster homes that are available helps enable Colonial
Rescue to place more hounds successfully. If there weren't
any foster homes we would be forced to kennel the dogs, or
worse, leave them in a shelter.
Foster homes provide an easier transition
for the homeless dog before going to their forever home. Your
home is much nicer than a cage in a shelter with a hard cement
floor.
If you already have a basset hound you
are probably well versed and experienced with the breed. Adding
a temporary foster to your home can be a very rewarding experience.
Here are a few commonly asked questions about fostering:
Q . Is it hard to give up your foster
basset when the time comes for him/her to go to his/her permanent
home?
A . It is a bittersweet feeling that you get as you watch
your foster dog look out the window at you as he/she is being
driven away by his/her new family. Try to remain focused on
the rescue cause and know that this empty spot can soon be
filled with another homeless basset.
Q . Is fostering a lot of work?
A . Caring for two dogs isn't much more work than caring for
one. My hounds enjoy the new fosters and usually quickly make
friends with one another. Dogs by nature are social animals
and enjoy the companionship. If a foster dog does not like
other dogs then they are kept separate from our hounds. Rescue
is made aware of the problem and quickly finds a home for
the dog to be placed in a "one dog only" household.
Please know that fostering is not for
everyone. Think long and hard before you make your decision.
Make sure everyone in your family is in agreement about fostering.
You and your family will need to provide structure for your
foster dog to help him conform to your lifestyle and make
his/her transition easier.
Colonial Basset Hound Rescue will provide
you with guidance and advice throughout the foster dog's stay
in your home. We encourage you to ask as many questions as
you want. Try to arrange for a visit to one of our current
foster families to get a feel for for what it may be like
living with a foster dog.
